So we made it back from Haiti! It was a life changing experience, and I think it will be very hard for me to hear anyone who lives in America complaining about little things after this trip. There are no pictures or video that can truly explain Haiti. Really everything that we have in the US is the opposite in Haiti. We have clean water, they do not, we have houses, they live in tents, we have electricity, they don't, we have food whenever we want, they don't, we have doctors and hospitals, they do not and so on.
It was so tough to see the extreme poverty. We met about 550 orphans and gave them each their very own God Feet, which they truly cherished. It may be the first new pair of shoes they have ever owned. I wish we had more for them like food and water. I gave a little boy a bag of my chips and he hid it under his shirt and ran to a dark corner to eat them as fast as possible. Some kids just wanted a sip of water. Its tough to imagine living without clean water. It is so hot and humid there, no AC, the kids go to school outside in a tent starving.
Most of the kids we met were sick. Their little bellies were full of parasites (worms), which take 70% of the nutrients they get from their one meal a day. They don't get beds to sleep in or blankets, just a tile floor or a steel "bed". Our inmates in prison in America are treated a million times better than these orphans. 5 year olds were wearing size 2T.
We visited an all boys orphanage while we were there, a little boy had just died from Cholera before we arrived, another disease Haiti is struggling with. We thought the other kids would be sad that they just lost their friend, but they are so used to it, it really didn't phase them.
The kids lined up for their God Feet like zombies, tired, sick, hungry, hot... after they got their new shoes they perked up a bit. Started to smile and feel special. They sang and danced for us. It was so neat to actually see how God Feet can change lives first hand. All of the hard work our team does back in Arizona. We got to see what a difference we can make. For each person that bought a pair of God Feet in America, their matched pairs got to go to kids that didn't have shoes, or had shoes that were way too small for them or old and worn. By giving a pair of God Feet we are also able to spread a message of hope to the kids.
These shoes can save their lives. They walk around barefoot over rough terrain, where goats and pigs also walk. Having shoes protects the bottom of their feet and can save them from open sores and more parasites.
